Looking for a great way to support local businesses during Women’s History Month (and all year long)? We’ve got a few ideas to help you support female-owned, locally grown businesses that support our communities and region.
Bonner Springs – Located inconspicuously on K-32 Highway in between Bonner Springs and Edwardsville sits a spot that is a local favorite and woman-owned gem featuring classic comfort food and regional specialties. The Glass Cat, offering casual dining, libations, and cocktails, is owned by Stephanie Cashion, a Wyandotte County native who has been around the regional food scene for decades. Since opening her newest culinary adventure, The Glass Cat has offered homestyle classics, including homemade biscuits and gravy, to regional fare that highlights Wyandotte County’s eastern European heritage. The cabbage rolls are a staple each week and regularly sell out. Every weekend there are new specials to try and savor something you may not have tried lately.
Kansas City, KS - Chicago's Bar is located in the historic Strawberry Hill neighborhood, known to be the ultimate spot in KC for a hip dive bar on every corner. Owner Laura Summa, a proud KCK native, is passionate about her hometown, her beautiful family, design, creativity, art, old architecture, hard work, big dreams and engaging with interesting people. In 2013, alongside her husband Wes, they took a bold step, acquiring the beloved bar where Laura was once a bartender. As the Owner, Laura has crafted a special space for the community, celebrating nearly 11 years of memories and blessings, with hopes for many more ahead.
Kansas City, MO - When the COVID-19 pandemic put a hold on Jackie Nguyen's acting career, she sought refuge in Kansas City where she ultimately decided to combine another interest and her culture. She never expected it would grow into what it has. Today, Café Cà Phê -- Kansas City's first Vietnamese coffee shop -- dazzles with bright colors and inventive menu items that deliver irresistibly rich flavors. But her main goal: create a space where everyone is welcomed equally and leaves with more than they came in with.
Leavenworth - What began as a military spouse’s at-home hobby grew into two thriving brick-and-mortar boutiques, with the flagship Artistic Works by Lu anchoring Leavenworth’s historic downtown shopping district. Jewelry maker Lu Knueven credits her “country roots and urban soul” for her unique necklace, bracelet and earring designs, which recently earned her a woman-owned business of the year award from the state of Kansas. Shoppers love to mix and match pieces with Lu’s range of curated fashions. As Lu would say, Artistic Works stores have a mission: “to help women feel beautiful… every day!”
Merriam - Located in Merriam Town Center, Inspired Play Cafe is a new, woman-owned business designed for parents seeking a welcoming space to relax while their kids engage in safe, creative play. Founded by a local entrepreneur who saw the need for more parent-friendly play spaces, the cafe offers a full menu of nutritious food and beverages, a thoughtfully designed play area, and opportunities for social connection. More than just a cafe, it’s a community hub where families can gather, unwind, and enjoy enriching experiences together. Learn more at Inspired Play Cafe, 5640 Antioch Road or visit www.inspiredplaycafe.com.
Olathe - Nestled in the heart of Downtown Olathe, Junque Drawer Boutique & Studio is a women-owned gem inside a charming three-story historic home. Packed with unique gifts, local goods, and stylish décor, it’s the perfect spot for a day of shopping.
Step inside and be welcomed by Jane, Hannah, and their incredible team, whose warmth and passion for Olathe make every visit special. Each room is filled with hidden treasures—from handcrafted jewelry and locally made candles to community-inspired apparel and home accents. With so much to explore, you’re sure to find something special!
Overland Park - Local sisters Amber Schreiber and Lindsay Krumbholz founded The Golden Scoop in 2020 with one mission: to provide meaningful workforce development and training for young adults with developmental disabilities. Their first shop opened in 2021, followed by a second in 2024, both in Overland Park. Here, you’ll find made-from-scratch premium ice cream, coffee drinks, and baked goods served with a smile by Super Scoopers – adults aged 18 and up with cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, autism, and other developmental disabilities.
As Women’s History Month wraps up, let’s continue to celebrate and support the incredible women who pour their passion and creativity into the businesses that enrich our region. From cozy cafes and boutique shops to vibrant bars and restaurants, these women-owned businesses represent the heart and soul of our communities. By visiting, sharing, and supporting these local gems, we not only honor their hard work but also strengthen our neighborhoods. Let’s make it a year-round effort to champion the amazing women behind these companies and keep telling their stories for generations to come.
