Made in KC: holiday gift giving by local makers!

kc holiday makers

Shopping local has been trending for awhile now and everyone wants to share their love of Kansas City with others via t-shirts, artwork, food and other made-in-Kansas City products. Perhaps there’s no better time to shop local than during the holiday season when KC makers crank out the merchandise knowing they have dozens of shows, pop-up shops, online orders and holiday marts to stock every weekend. No need to wait until Small Business Saturday—you can shop local and shop now!

If you’re already making your list and checking it twice, I’ve compiled my favorite KC maker brands and their wares just in time for the gift giving season. What’s your favorite local maker?

KC Makers I Love

The Object Enthusiast – for all things ceramic, this maker has beautiful pieces for your home or office, created by local artist Emily Reinhardt. The hanging succulent vase is on my personal wish list for any friends or family reading this little ditty.

Homegrown & Happy – self-admittedly, these chicks are my personal friends since Kindergarten, but when I tell you their Great Gran’s Pickles are amazing, I mean it. These pickle pioneers believe in homegrown, healthy and natural snacking for their family and yours. If you’re daring, try hot bread and butters, my personal fave!

Tyler Kingston Wood +Supply Co – this husband and wife duo creates the most beautiful home furnishings and décor, textiles and more from their local KC spot. I’m loving these made-to-order reclaimed wood triangle shelves.

Mixture USA – winner of Huffington Post’s favorite Pumpkin Spice Candle fragrance, Mixture USA is a soy-based candle, bath and body product company in Merriam, Kansas. With dozens of scents and varieties to choose from, Mixture’s line makes the perfect stocking stuffer or home décor gift.

Wood+Salt = delicious flavor. Creating small batch spice blends, brines, rubs, infused sugars, smoked finishing salts, and sustainably harvested wood chips for smoking, Wood+Salt is a great choice for the foodie lover in your life.

KC Wine Co. – perhaps no holiday list is complete without a bottle of wine, right? Whether you drink it while hosting a holiday shin-dig or gift it to your bestie, KC Wine Co. has a great selection, a beautiful winery and fantastic local events held at their indoor tasting room located on Gardner Road in Olathe.

Tall Grass Toffee – my brain is programmed to pair wine with chocolate and this Lenexa-based toffee company is just the ticket. Made with pure, fresh, all natural ingredients, like sweet creamy butter, pure sugar, and the finest chocolates, fruits and nuts available, Tall Grass Toffee makes a great gift. Speaking of gifts, check out their prepared gift baskets perfect for holiday gift giving.

Hammerpress -- while we may love the convenience of texting, Snapchatting and Facebooking, nothing says “I love you” or “I’m thinking about you” quite like a personal, handwritten note. KC has no shortage of paperie shops and designer press companies, but one that I LOVE is Hammerpress, located in the Crossroads. Using old-school press techniques by applying wood or ink lettering into the paper, Hammerpress offers vibey designs, bold graphics and unique, creative sentiments in all of their prints.

Beer Paws - I can’t leave out our furry friends, but there’s a twist. One local maker, in a weird, but brilliant way, decided to celebrate the relationship beer drinkers share with their dogs. From koozies to doggie biscuits, collars to candles and lots more, I give a big ol’ cheers to local maker, Beer Paws.

Charlie Hustle – now a popular and favorite local maker, Charlie Hustle shirts combine old-school design and nostalgia with quality fabric to create a line of products you’ll want in every color. The vintage-inspired KC heart shirt is a staple offering from the CH brand and one I see daily in and around Kansas City.
