Discovering the Great Outdoors of Kansas CitySummer is here. The days are long and warm, and staying in and watching Netflix is (slightly) less appealing. There is so much more to do outdoors in Kansas City than just your average swing set and slides. So slather up the sunscreen and slip on some comfortable shoes, itís time to get in tune with nature!
Beat the Boredom
An entire afternoon of fun doesnít have to cost a lot of money. In fact, it doesnít have to cost at all! Kansas City, KS is home to three different spray parks where kids can splash around, free of admission! The parks are made up of colorful loops, towers and hoops that are the perfect height for all ages and abilities.
Pack a picnic, rent a pedal boat or see a show! Shawnee Mission Park is made up of 1,250-acres and is the most-visited park in the entire state of Kansas. It features a ton of family fun facilities including nature trails, play areas and a marina where visitors can rent canoes, sailboats and more. Shawnee Mission Park is also home to The Theatre in the Park, a community theater that puts on multiple spectacular shows each summer. Tickets are affordable and performances are family friendly. Outside food is allowed so bring a blanket and something delicious for dinner for a show under the stars!

With 200+ acres of adventure filled with more than 1,100 animals, the Kansas City Zoo gets you up close and personal with lions, leopards and orangutans. Oh my! The Zoo continues to win the favorite family day trip from KCParent Magazine and best kidsí attraction as voted on by tourists. An always changing, always fun family experience for all ages. Open daily, year round. It's always a new adventure at the Kansas City Zoo!
Bonner Springs, KS offers a new age, small-town charm with its eclectic local shops and eateries. But just outside of downtown Bonner Springs is something a little less quaint. Zip KC is a 143-acrepark, which offers three different zip line tours that let you soar through the air at 50mph! The different tours let you climb a 65-ft tour, explore the beauty of Kansas nature, and marvel at the scenic view of downtown Kansas City.

Stop and smell the roses at Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens! Visitors can stroll along nature trails and different themed gardens including: International Sculpture Garden, Childrenís Garden and the Erikson Water Garden.
Get lost in a fantasy land of beautiful blooms. Powell Gardens is located just 30 miles east of Kansas City, and features 6,000 varieties of plants in seasonal displays. Summer welcomes festivals fun for all ages including the Booms & Blooms Festival (July 2, 2016) and the Festival of Butterflies (August 5-7 and 12-14, 2016).
