On the Hunt: Boutiques & Vintage Shops of Kansas City

From high end, locally made, and everything in between, Kansas City is home to some of the finest shopping in the Midwest. When it comes to picking out for gifts for my friends and family (and maybe for myself), I get a rush out of finding something thoughtful and one-of-a-kind. As a Kansas City native and retail addict I like to consider myself well-versed when it comes to area shopping. One could spend the entire holiday season exploring the plethora of boutiques and vintage shops in the metro area, but here are a few spots I’d recommend to get you started.

Artistic Works by Lu, Leavenworth artisti works by luThe city of Leavenworth, KS is home to a historic downtown that’s filled with mom and pop businesses any shopper would adore. However, the one that stands out most to me would have to be Artistic Works by Lu. Along with bohemian and feminine clothing, you’ll find an endless amount of beautiful, handmade jewelry all designed by boutique owner, Lu Knueven. You can choose from the intricate creations crafted by Lu, or you can pair your own choice of stones, charms and precious metals to make something completely personalized for you!

Threshing Bee, Overland Park The only way to begin to describe Threshing Bee, found in the Prairie Fire entertainment district of Overland Park, KS is a retail experience reinvented. Here you can shop not one, but eight different boutiques all in one space. At each unique stop you’ll come across a new mix of eclectic apparel, handbags, shabby chic home décor and more. With so many different boutiques featured at Threshing Bee, every time you take a visit you are bound to discover something new!

Sav-Art, A Simple Gallery, Kansas City, KS Artist Mike Savage is known for his bold depictions of Midwest landscapes and celebrated Kansas City scenes. I find his gallery and gift shop, Sav-Art, A Simple Gallery to be an absolute must-stop for anyone visiting the Kansas City area. Tucked away in a neighborhood that’s also home to a few other local businesses, this hidden gem features Savage’s pieces, along with work from other local artists. Peruse the shop for colorful jewelry, paintings and prints for your home or office, and other gifts perfect for the Kansas City enthusiast in your life.

This & That, Bonner Springs YBella Patina (2)ou never know what you’ll find at This & That! Located in the quaint downtown Bonner Springs, this vintage shop is filled wall to wall with antique dishware, old-timey games and toys, rustic furniture and more! You’ll have as much fun scouring the shelves for collectables from different time periods as you will watching your vintage-loving friend opening their quirky gift on Christmas morning.

West Bottoms, Kansas City, MO You should plan on spending an entire day exploring the vintage boutiques of the thriving West Bottoms of Kansas City. During the first weekend of each month, thousands of shoppers come from all over to hunt the stores of the historic district for anything from retro clothing to repurposed furniture. Bella Patina and Good JuJu are two of my favorites among the many locally-praised shops. The hustle and bustle of first weekends in the West Bottoms will without a doubt make for one of your most exciting shopping experiences to date!
